"Durham County is very, very creepy and unsettling, and entirely addictive" --New York Times

Deep Discount continues their stellar DVD deals with Durham County, season 1 for $11.98. Although unlike the Forever Knight deal, this one is only for today.

At that price, it makes a great blind buy for anyone who hasn't seen the series.

"It’s pretty tough moving into a new town, raising a family and working on a police case involving a serial killer…especially when the prime suspect lives right across the street from you. You know what they say about buying a new house: location, location, location. It turns out that Det. Mike Sweeney was never cut out to be a realtor. And if he’s not careful, his family might be cut out of his life forever.

“Durham County” is a gripping crime drama that is so tightly written and well performed that you can’t just watch one episode at a time. It is anything but a straight-forward police drama. The plot twists and turns are as sharp as the edge of a knife."

If you like shows like Damages, The Wire or Homicide: Life on the Streets, I think you'll Durham County.

Oh, and one thing I found amusing about the show was that a character was named Natalie LaCroix. I seem to recall a Forever Knight fanfic that had a gotcha ending of Natalie and LaCroix married.

All three seasons of Forever Knight can currently be found at Deep Discount for $11.98. Shipping is free.

Now there's no excuse not to own the sets.

Actually, now there's no excuse not to own an extra set (or all of them) to have handy for special fandom emergencies like say  brainwashing influencing potential new fans.

Remember when the sets had a SRP of $80?

Based on several online vendors, it looks like Sony has issued a price drop for the three seasons of Forever Knight.

The suggested retail price was once $59.95.

Now, amazon.com has seasons one and two listed at $29.95 and season three is currently at $24.99. A 17% discount from SRP. Seasons one and two qualify for free shipping. Season three is a penny short of qualifying for the $25 benchmark.

Deepdiscount has seasons one, two, and three listed for $23.34. All three qualify for free shipping.

There are reports that select Walmarts have the sets for $15. Barnes & Noble had the same pricing but the sets quickly sold out.

The new price is great for fans who have yet to purchase the sets. They were notoriously pricey despite the lack of features and given the popularity of vampire-centric media,  the lower price point might be enough of an enticement for the curious.

We planned out a tentative itinerary for the New Mexico/Colorado road trip and our first night will be in Roswell, New Mexico. While checking out the hotel situation online I was finding that a lot of them were booked solid. Further investigation revealed that the Roswell UFO Festival runs through the 4th of July weekend. That is hilariously funny. I'm not an "aliens are among us" person but I'm so jazzed. I must find a kitschy inflatable alien to bring home.

Before reading about the festival I had visions of Mulder and Scully in their little motel room in Roswell from the XF series finale. I revisited a few of my favorite post "The Truth" fic to get in the mood. Now I've got visions of the Roswell season 1 episode "The Convention"in my head. I rewatched the entire series last month and this is very fresh in mind. Although, I don't think Jason Behr will be manning the information booth.

I need a Roswell icon or two. Also, I received the Blood Ties DVD in the mail today. Now I can watch the series properly or at least the first half of it. I'm very pleased about that.

Drive by post before I'm late for work.

Blood Ties comes to DVD sometime in June. Now I can finally see the last half of the season (no Lifetime, not season 2).

Press release is here.

Pre-sale at amazon for $18.99.

Now someone bring New Amsterdam and Journeyman to DVD and I'll be very, very happy.

I've been watching Quantum Leap reruns lately on ION or rather I should say I was watching Quantum Leap on ION. The channel is rebranding itself and QL is either on hiatus or has been kicked to the curb. It's a shame. It's so gosh darn enjoyable. )

[livejournal.com profile] brightknightie has kindly posted on her journal a list of FK prompts for [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon . There are so many to choose from. They're that good. The goal of the ficathon is "to celebrate non-sexual/non-romantic relationships between women." FK isnt the only fandom represented. Battlestar Galactica, Dark Angel, the DC universe, Doctor Who, Friday Night Lights, Gossip Girl, Smallville, Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate SG1, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and X-Files are just a few of the other fandoms with prompts.

I read a few days ago about the impending demolition of Yankee Stadium and I instantly thought of Prufrock's Love historical AU X-Files fanfic A Moment in the Sun. I remember reading it... )

I posted this over at [livejournal.com profile] the_border this weekend but I neglected to do so here. According to TV Shows on DVD The Border is coming to DVD in Canada on November 12th. Since Canada and the US are both Region 1 those of us in the states who purchase from a Canadian retailer should be able to use the DVDs. Season 2 starts next Monday on the 29th.

The [livejournal.com profile] xf_pornbattle is going strong. I took a look at some of the prompts last night and one of the them jumped out of me. Hmmm, maybe. The deadline is Wednesday and I really should be finishing up my [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic story but it's tempting.

I caught DirectTV's breathtaking promo for season 3 of Friday Night Lights. Sadly there was no Jason or Smash but Coach, Mrs. Coach, Julie, Matt, Lyla, Landry, Tyra, and Riggins were present and accounted for. It's eerily beautiful. Everyone is frolicking wandering through a dark, magical field and are dressed in their finery. "Devil Town" and the rumbling of thunder sets the mood. Did I mention it was gorgeous? Note to self: rewatch seasons 1 & 2 before October.

abby82: (Whoa!)
TrueMyth over at the X-Files TWOP forum posted a link to this and I simply had to share here. It's a deleted scene from The X-Files pilot and I swear this looks news. It's got a baby Gillian Anderson (24 years old) as Scully lecturing students at the FBI Academy in Quantico. She is so cute but her students look older than she is. I must check my DVDs.

Another holdover from the IWTB press is this anecdote from British comedian and Shaun of the Dead actor Simon Pegg's blog. Pegg appeared on The Late Show with David Letterman the same day Gillian did.
Got into the Bowery Hotel, showered, went out and bought a shirt, met up with my friend Tony, then went to The Ed Sullivan Theatre. Got to my dressing room to find a message from Gillian Anderson scrawled on my mirror in lipstick: PEGG - I CAN'T BELIEVE YOU'RE NOT COMING TO MY FILM. DIE SCUMBAG!!! - DANA. I was supposed to be going to the X-Files premiere when I got home but couldn't go because we had friends from LA getting in that day for Nick's wedding on Friday.

To quote Mulder in "Bad Blood", "Dana!?" How hilarious is she. I guess taken out of context it seems downright rude but this is so Gillian. Simon Pegg stared in the cult British series Spaced back in the late 90s and his character had a well documented crush on Gillian and Scully. He also happens to be a big fan of the show.  Flashforward a couple of years later and Pegg is sharing scenes with Gillian in How to Lose Friends and Alienate People, which is due out in October. Someone lets Gillian know about the history between Pegg and her XF alter ego and it's all embarrassing, awkward, and very funny. Gillian's ribbing is extended fun from their time on the movie together.

In other fandom bits, Cutthroat Business one of my Forever Knight stories has been nominated in two categories over at the [profile] forsaken_fandom awards. That is way cool. A great big thanks to the person who nominated me.

~~~
I almost bought the Gossip Girl DVD yesterday but I held off. I'm still trying to decide on which X-Files iPod to get so I'm keeping my wallet closed as much as possible.
~~~
And lastly, CW  has yet to release any promotional material for Smallville. It was rumored by people in the know that images were going to be released this week but they didn't. Come one CW! It's been too long since I've seen new Smallville stuff and the premiere is September 18th .

IWTB Domestic Box Office Total: $20.5 million as of Thursday, August 21st.
abby82: (Nick & Nat)

So back in March 2007 I bought the first and second seasons of Forever Knight as part of Deep Discount DVD's buy one get one free sale. I was majorly obsessed with FK back in the mid 90s. I started watching in syndication just in time to see the final three episodes. Needless to say I didn't know at the time that it was the series finale and was devastated. Not the final episode of Quantum Leap devastated but I enjoyed what I'd seen and I wanted more. Flashforward a couple of months later and Sci-Fi channel picks up FK and begins to air the first and second season which at that point I had yet to see. Like a good little fangirl in training I pleaded with the parental figures to let me record FK in their room since that was where the satellite box was located. I meticulously kept records of the episodes and watched and rewatched my favorite scenes. Well like all things I eventually went on to other things (The X-Files) and my once precious FK recordings were relegated to the back of my closet. Years went by and nary a thought was spent on the show about an 800 year old, vintage Caddy driving vampire with aspirations to join the living until the purchase of the DVD sets.

I was absolutely delighted to discover that FK was just as enjoyable as I'd found it almost a decade ago. I marathoned through the sets and one night I woke up with a story idea in my head. I'd never planned to write FK fic but I committed everything to paper just in case. I played around with the story and aside from some polishing up and some minor tweaking the following story is pretty much as written from that night.

title: the ease of friendship
author: abby
fandom: forever knight
spoilers: none
category:pre-Dark Knight vignette
started: march 2007
finished: may 2007
disclaimer: they don't belong to me, i'm only borrowing them; no money is being made

summary: a drowsy medical examiner, a foot rub, and an enigmatic vampire cop

 It's oh so appropriate that my first post ever should be about my growing by the minute dvd collection. Amazon.com is having another one of their sales and this time I couldn't resist the temptation. I blame it on my need to complete my Forever Knight Trilogy. Season 3 will soon be mine! There's only 3 in stock so yay to all the FK fans out there who are still supporting the Knight. Quantum Leap season 5--the final season--will also be in my clutches. Other than season 1 it's the only region 1 set from that series that has the original music intact so that decision wasn't a hard one to make. Ray Charles' "George on my Mind" is playing in the final scene as it should be and it hasn't been replaced. As for the other seasons, I'm going the region 2 route. Of course that will require a region free player which I don't have so that won't be anytime soon. Batman: The Animated Series season 2 has also been purchased. It's hard to believe that show is like 15 years old. The episodes hold up so well. That is the definitive Batman as far as I'm concerned.

Movies wise I finally got Frankenstein. It's got far better entertainment value than Dracula. There's something comical and profoundly sad about the scene between Frankenstein and the little girl by the water. I also got three Midnite Movie combos for a grand total of six movies there. One of them is the Karen Black remake of 'Invaders From Mars'. That movie seriously have me nightmares as a kid and I'm looking forward to seeing it again. I'm a little bummed that there weren't any decent vampire movies from the 1970s and no those Count Lorga movies don't count.

I also ordered She-Ra Princess of Power season 2 on deepdiscount by it's on back order so it's going to be a while before I get that one.

Saw a pretty good promo for CBS' Moonlight show. It made the show look pretty good to the point that I want the show to last more than one season. Why do I feel like I'm cheating on Forever Knight by feeling that way?
