Countdown: Five days to FKFicFest '25 due date

Sometime this week, give or take syndication schedules, is the 29th anniversary of the first airing of "Last Knight," the Forever Knight finale. (I usually count it as May 18, but it could have been any time that week in each local market.)

How odd and amazing that we're still here, enjoying FK and appreciating each other.

Do we still use the word "jossed?"

Does fandom at large still use the term "jossed," that is, having a plot theory or fanfic story in progress overtaken or overturned by emerging canon? Or do we now avoid the term because of its original namesake's revealed behavior? (Or because young folks don't get the reference?) I see that it's still on TVTropes. Just curious!

I was idly thinking ahead to Hyrule Warriors: Age of Imprisonment, which will surely joss its share of theories and stories, as well as supply some "I knew it!"s.

Sherlock Holmes: Come If Convenient by rudbeckia

Fandom: Sherlock Holmes (tagged as both books and Granada)
Pairings/Characters: Holmes/Watson
Rating: E
Length: 13,317 words
Creator Links: rudbeckia
Theme: Angst with a Happy Ending, courting

Summary: Watson, finally pushed away by Holmes’s lack of regard for his feelings, has left 221B Baker Street and moved into his practice. Holmes is confused—he did nothing wrong! But when Holmes realises (because everyone who gives him advice tells him so) that he is to blame, he knows he has to do something meaningful to win Watson back.

Reccer's Notes: Watson gets tried of Holmes' mistreatment and decides to leave Baker St.  Much angst in the beginning, but also a Holmes determined to get his Watson back, cue the wooing!  I enjoyed the inclusion of side characters like Mrs Hudson, Mycroft and Lestrade, and there was also an original character, a woman doctor who works with Watson, that I greatly enjoyed.  It is tagged as both books and Granada, but I pictured the Granada lads when reading it.

chance is the only game I play with

by abby82

category: 1940s Jazz Club AU
rating: Explicit
word count: 46,000
warnings: None
author’s note: This story was initially inspired by two photographs. The first is a promotional image that was published in Elle Quebec for Roy Dupuis' 2004 movie Jack Paradise in which he plays a jazz pianist in Montreal. He looked absolutely amazing with his white dinner jacket, half smoked cigarette and just the right amount of stubble on his face. The second were two promotional images of Peta Wilson as Nikita that were shot for the series' first season. She was wearing a fur stole and her hair was in some Veronica Lake style waves. Those images alone screamed for a 1940s AU of some sort. The plot point concerning Nikita and Operations was inspired by a wonderful story called "Mutual Respect" by Enjoue and Jean in which they both have to feign an emotional attachment to buy them some time with their kidnappers. I had this story in my drafts folder for some time now and when the 14th round of the [community profile] smallfandomfest came around, I knew it was time to finish the story.

story began: October 2023
story finished: April 2025

links: DW | AO3 | Tumblr

summary: Dressed in fine furs and jewels, long blonde waves frame her exquisite face. Big, blue feline eyes add further depth to her mysterious beauty. She looks expensive and completely unattainable. Her name is Nikita and she is the crown jewel at the center of Section’s plush jewelry box.

Inside Section One book (ebook & audio book edition)

In a doozy of a surprise Christopher Heyn has released a 2nd edition of his out of print book "Inside Section One: Creating and Producing TV's La Femme Nikita" detailing the in-depth production of La Femme Nikita. The original edition of the book is somewhat of a holy grail for LFN fans due to its limited printing. Copies on eBay can go for several hundred dollars. It's a beautiful book, but its coffee table size makes the glue used in the binding quite unwieldy.

image hostimage host

This second edition is geared more towards people interested in film production, so it has gone through a few edits here and there (one omission is hair stylist Roger Dalgliesh venting about how Roy Dupuis was itching for a cigarette on the flight out to Los Angeles to shoot the Herb Ritts promotional campaign and he ate all of his peanuts to compensate), but it has also been updated to make reference to today's streaming landscape and other changes to the television industry. Also, the original cover with one of the images of Peta and Roy from the Herb Ritts photoshoot has also been removed and replaced. Apparently, permission to use the image was limited only to the first edition.

The timeline at the end of the original book that details major events in the characters' lives is missing, mainly because it wouldn't be of importance to a film student, but Heyn has mentioned that he might make it available in the future for a small additional cost.

Star Trek AOS: A Guiding Star by BC_Brynn

Fandom: Star Trek AOS
Pairings/Characters: Kirk/Spock
Rating: Teen +
Length: 11,213
Creator Links: BC_Brynn at AO3
Theme: Angst with a happy ending.

Summary: My name is S’chn T’gai Spock, and I am six years old. At the age of twenty-nine, I have been involved in an accident that has reduced my physical age and erased my memories accordingly.

Reccer's Notes: Usually, in stories about aging, one partner/beloved grows old, but in this one, Spock finds himself a child again. Despite losing many memories, he knows and remembers Jim, and he is absolutely determined to get back to him. But he has to grow up first. There are a lot of challenges along the way.

What I admire about this story is that both the author and the narrator (Spock) have such singular focus and total commitment to the project. One of the issues the story takes on--and what sets it apart, IMO--is the way that a slightly different upbringing and life path create a different person. It also addresses the sacrifices one must make to achieve a goal. It's absolutely heartbreaking. But, as this theme specifies, there is a happy ending. Also, of course, it's got big meant-to-be energy!

SGA: Not Near the Sea by Auburn

Fandom: Stargate Atlantis
Characters/Pairings: John Sheppard/Rodney McKay
Rating: Teen
Length: 617
Content Notes: no AO3-type warnings apply
Creator Links: Auburn on AO3, Auburn's old eternalvox website on Wayback
Themes: Angst with a happy ending, Established relationship

Summary: John might walk into the water and disappear like a changeling from some bastard fairy tale; everything rich and strange he’d given Rodney fading like magic without him, lost.

Reccer's Notes: Angst with a happy ending can be compact as well. We start the story with hints of John having been through something traumatic, but we never know what (and given Pegasus, take your pick). Or maybe they've lost Atlantis. It's from Rodney's point of view, his angst, and I love the unknowns here, the lyricism and pain, finally resolved in a storm's wild beauty.

Countdown: One Week to FKFicFest '25 Due Date

Stories — 500 words minimum, challenge-style — come due on Saturday, May 24 in our AO3 queue (unless you've arranged in advance to post to our Dreamwidth queue instead, which no one has). Stories start releasing on Monday, May 26 (US Memorial Day).

(Two stories by two authors are already queued!)

As always, we can edit on the AO3 while stories are in the queue (though not on DW). We load the queue before we start releasing because I need to know what stories we'll have in order to schedule our releases by length, rating, characters, etc., to help maximize reading and commenting fun for everyone!

If you're seeking a beta reader, or to volunteer beta-reading, try our beta-reading post (or post on your own journal!). And please excuse the reminder, but, again, if you choose, as a proofreading/editing tool, you may use genAI, like Google Gemini or ChatGPT, just like you'd use any spellchecker or grammar-checker tool, with a keen eye to your own intentions and voice; please do not let genAI write a single sentence for you. No one wants to read genAI. We want to read you!

Pimp: The Bastard Son and The Devil Himself by maevedarcy

If you've been looking for a series that combines old magic and modern day situations, if you've been looking for nuanced characters that have depth and the worst kind of luck, if you've been craving for a love triangle to get resolved the right way (with polyamory) then I have the perfect series for you.

The Bastard Son and The Devil Himself is a very short series, only 8 episodes, that will make you despise Netflix execs while making you sit down and take matters into your own hands. While this is based of a book series, I 100% recommend keeping the two separate as the show has a very different vibe from the books.

This series follows Nathan Byrne, the son of a notorious witch responsible for a deadly massacre, as he tries to find his place in the world and find out what his powers are. As the conflict between the Blood Witches and the Fairborn Witches escalates, Nathan finds himself the target of a modern-day witch hunt. He begins a life-or-death quest, building alliances with fellow witches Annalise and Gabriel, while learning about himself along the way. More below the cut.
