Oh La Femme Nikita, look at you hiding in plain sight all this time

Last month, by accident I clicked on the Roku channel on my Roku player and it launched the channel. Curious about its offerings I decided to poke around and came across the La Femme Nikita TV series that ran back on the USA network in the late 90s. I remember really loving the show when it aired, so on a lark I decided to watch the first episode and it was soooo enjoyable. One episode became two, became three, became four, etc. The last time I watched this show I was about 14/15 years old and I was surprised about how many little things I remembered about these episodes even after all these years. Peta Wilson and Roy Dupuis are just as magnetic I remember them. She’s fire. He’s ice. They have OTP written all over them in spades. They are truly just wonderful.

I ended up binging the entire series in about a week in a half. I was staying up until 2 or 3 in the morning watching episodes. It’s been a very long time since I’ve binged a series like this. There are so many series that I want to watch but the reality is that I don’t do it and certainly not like this. I finally watched The Wire a few years ago and really enjoyed it but it was a much more measured affair. Maybe one or two episodes a day and if I missed a day or two then no biggie. The same went for Battlestar Galactica. Another show that I greatly enjoyed but didn’t feel that urgency to consume. I enjoyed my time with the series and was happy to check off another series off my ‘Need to Watch’ list. The closest to an obsessive binge was perhaps the BBC miniseries London Spy but it was only 5 episodes. I’d have to go back to 2013 when I binge watched the 13 episodes that comprised of Hannibal’s first season. In short, as much as I have the desire to watch and perhaps even binge new shows, I just don’t do it. I lean more towards rewatching old favorites and even that has its complications. Most of my old favorites have your traditional 20+ episodes a season. That can be a chore when there’s so many seasons. Seasons I’m happy exist because when they originally aired I remember fretting over whether or not they were going to get renewed or not. It just doesn’t lend itself to the way I consume my media now. And then of course is the first world problem where the show isn’t streaming anywhere and God forbid I have to get up and switch the DVDs. Oh the horror! Will someone not think of the lazy and those who do not want to bother with another remote to keep track of?

One of the funniest things about finally watching all of La Femme Nikita is that I actually own the DVDs of the show. All 5 seasons were sitting on my DVD bookcase completely unopened. I have since opened them to listen to the DVD commentaries. I’ve also started ripping them onto an external SSD hard drive for vidding purposes. I really want to vid the show. I just don’t know how successful I’m going to be in that endeavor. I’ve been trying to vid for the last 5 years and have yet to finish anything.

So yeah, La Femme Nikita is my new obsession. I have actually put my Hannibal fandom activities on pause while I immerse myself in all the LFN fic I can find. Like Forever Knight, most of the fic was on one big fannish archive and only a few have brought their stories over to Ao3. I’ve mostly been using the Wayback Machine to work my way through them. The stories I’ve come across have been really enjoyable though. It’s been fun coming across all the little fannish tropes and in jokes sprinkled into the stories. The moral of the story in all this is never discount media that was created over 20 years ago. They still have much to inspire.
