I am beyond tickled that Mads trended for a while today. You are glorious, you delightful Dane and more people need to know it.

And there's also the added bonus of Mindy Kaling's new movie Late Night also trending, even if it is a promoted tweet. Hugh Dancy has a significant role as the movie's resident lothario. It's been a while since he's played a non creepy charmer.

Looks like the movie Arctic that Mads filmed in Iceland back in late 2016 is finally surfacing. It was announced as part of the Midnight Screenings at Cannes this year. I'm so jazzed for this. There's already a clip out. Of all the projects he's got completed this is the one I'm most excited for. There's also the added bonus of Cannes being an awesome place for new Mads photos.

There's some good and bad news on the Hugh Dancy front.

He and his wife Claire Danes are expecting their second child sometime during the summer. That is such lovely, lovely news.

For those of us who enjoy his face and welcoming his work into our homes on weekly basis, sadly his show The Path will no longer provide that. Hulu has announced that it is not picking up the show for a fourth season.

I have mixed feelings about that. The show had some strong performances from the three main leads but honestly the show itself was kinda meh. The first season was alright and what I saw of the second season was not interesting enough for me. I got my Hugh fix from gifs on Tumblr and video clips of his scenes. Plus on a superficial level there was the unfortunate haircut he chose to have for that role. It was no bueno.

It looks like Mads Mikkelsen is in talks to play the villain in the the Chaos Walking YA movie adaptation with Daisy Ridley and Tom Holland.

One one had it's got a great director in Doug Liman (The Bourne Identity, Edge of Tomorrow) with a pair of solid young leads, but on the other hand there's been some definite YA fatigue. I loved The Hunger Games movies. I went to see the first one completely blind and came out a total fan. I read all three books in one week and threw myself head first into the fandom and the fic. It's why I got a Tumblr. I know people point to the splitting of Mockingjay as a cash grab and part of the reason why people tired of YA movies but I loved those last two movies so much.

It's another villain role for Mads. Gosh darn it Mads! American audiences are never going to stop seeing you as a villain if all your English language roles are bad guys. However, Wikipedia describes his character Mayor Prentiss as "the mastermind behind the takeover, and later becomes self-proclaimed President of New World. He is extremely charismatic and manipulative, often choosing to play mind games instead of resorting to brute force. He learns to control his Noise, and can even use it as a weapon. Despite his cruelties, a running theme throughout the trilogy is whether or not he can be redeemed". That sounds pretty complex and Mads is no stranger to manipulative and charismatic characters. It's totally in his wheelhouse and he always plays those roles with great aplomb.

A high percentage of Mads' characters die in their movies. Chaos Walking is based on a trilogy of books and apparently Mayor Prentiss is in all three of them. So if the movies do well enough least we can count on three movies with Mads playing a significant role. And watching Mads' pretty, pretty face on the big screen is always such a delight.

I have no idea how big the role is. All I keep thinking is Donald Sutherland's role in The Hunger Games for reference, but something tells me the role might be bigger. Filming starts before the end of the summer and will likely go on for about 3 months in Montreal. I know some people were starting to wonder about a conflict with any potential Hannibal season 4. If the gods smile down on us I think the best case scenario for season 4 will be that it won't get started until late summer or early fall in 2018. By then season 2 of Bryan Fuller's American Gods should be wrapped. I think Daisy Ridley's schedule on the final Star Wars movie will inform when the second Chaos Walking movie will go into production. I don't think it should conflict with the Fall of 2018. And even if there's a slight overlap with Mads' schedule, Hannibal films in Toronto which is obviously only a hop, skip and a jump away from Montreal. Now if we do get some location shooting in Buenos Aires or if they can swing Cuba, well then that's something both productions are going to have to negotiate schedule wise.

I'm happy Mads is working again. After the huge promotional obligations he had for Rogue One and Doctor Strange he deserved some major time off. I just don't want to read another trilogy of books. I remember coming across the premise of the series and it struck me as pretty ridiculous. However people whose opinions I trusted would rave about the books on Tumblr. Then Doug Liman got involved and Charlie Kaufman for the screenplay I started to wonder if there was something there. I seriously don't want another obsession but I desperately want to know more about Mads' character. The character sounds interesting but boy does that premise sound hokey.

Mads has a history of picking some really interesting projects. That's one thing I've really appreciated as I've delved into his back catalog. I also think he and Tom Holland are going to get along famously. They're both former dancers with gymnastics backgrounds and their energy levels are both off the charts. The promotional tour is going to be bursting with cuteness. I can feel it in my bones.

I'm not really into Star Wars. I've seen the original trilogy. I've seen the prequels and that's pretty much it. The new ones don't hold any interest for me. However, I did see and enjoy Rogue One. Of course the only reason I set foot anywhere near that movie was because of Mads Mikkelsen, but it was a thoroughly entertaining movie that I would definitely recommend to any non Star Wars fan. And as for Mads...well Mads was Mads. Awesome as always and look! Playing a good guy in an English language movie. The last time he did that was like 10 years ago.

So now I've got a few Rogue One recs that have managed to slip onto my radar.

First up is a beautiful Rogue One vid by Vanity Sin which focuses on the Erso family and Orson Krennic.

Fic Recs:

The Best of All Possible Worlds by [archiveofourown.org profile] TigerPrawn

A secret experimental device. A means of escape. A new world with a familiar face. Galen Erso is a man displaced who needs to get home. Wrangled into helping. Persuaded by his Hippocratic oath. Held by his fascination. Mortimer Granville is a man on the verge of great things, greater than he could possibly know. They are both optimistic.

Notes: It's a curious thing. In Rogue One, Mads Mikkelsen plays scientist Galen Erso. Felicity Jones plays his grown daughter Jyn Erso. In 2011 Felicity Jones had a supporting role in the Victorian romantic comedy Hysteria. A movie about the invention of the vibrator. Seriously, check it out. It's a hidden gem. Anyhoo, said movie also starred Hugh Dancy, Mads Mikkelsen's Hannibal and King Arthur costar. Dancy's Mortimer Granville romanced Felicity Jones' Emily Dalrymple in the movie. So naturally someone decided to take that coincidence and run with it. The result is a charming crossover in the grand Hannigram AU/Rarepair tradition. Let the shy awkwardness and Victorian sexual tension between Galen and Mortimer commence. If you ask me Mortimer doesn't really get his due in Hannigram AU fic and this story lets his character shine.

The Speed of Light by [archiveofourown.org profile] Magical_Destiny

"My favorite children's book is about a little prince who came to earth from a distant asteroid. He meets a pilot whose plane has crashed in the desert. The little prince teaches the pilot many things, but mainly about love.”

Notes: I get so emotional with Spacedogs stories. They are my favorite Hannigram AU pairing. Nigel and Adam make me smile. They make me cry. They are the best pick me up when you want to lose yourself in a story. Magical_Destiny is a beautiful writer and she deftly melds Star Wars with the world of Spacedogs. Nigel crash lands in Tatoonie and makes his way to a cantina in Mos Eisley where he runs into Adam. Adam is trying to commission a pilot to take him back to Alderaan. This story takes place during New Hope so I think you know what they're not going to find. If you're in the mood for a thoughtfully planned out crossover give this Spacedogs in actual space story a gander.

Scattering Stars Like Dust by [archiveofourown.org profile] hesterbyrde

Two years before the events of Rogue One, Galen Erso is hard at work devising a plan to weaken the Death Star. He is joined on the Eadu Research Station by Adam Raki, a brilliant navigations specialist. A relationship is born from their abiding lonliness, their passion for science, and their belief that the stars are for everyone.

Notes: Adam and Galen fit perfectly together. To steal a line from Hannibal, they are "identically different" and hesterbyrde brings out their personality with panache. There's such a small window for these characters and not a single moment in this story feels wasted. Their time together is well lived in. God knows these two need it.

Galen Erso: a life.

Notes: Galen Erso is an extremely fascinating character. There are the obvious Robert Oppenheimer parallels in which scientific pursuits led to the creation of weapons of unspeakable destruction. In this short and potent story Galen's life is told in short burst before and after he's taken to work for Krennic. It's so incredibly sad but at the same time hopeful. Galen has lost his wife and he doesn't know of Jin's fate but he can persevere.

May the 4th be with you!
