After three seasons, the CBC drama The Border has been cancelled.

Ramblings on the series and actors )

--

Smallville has been renewed for a 10th season. Yep, that's right, a decade of Smallville. It will now surpass Stargate: SG-1 as the longest running sci-fi show in North America. I'm excited but that's shear craziness.

--

It appears that 24 will be ending its run after eight seasons.

It isn't official )

I looks like Forever Knight co-creator and executive producer James D. Parriott is headed back to Toronto (sort of).

According to the Hollywood Reporter, he's joined USA Network's Covert Affairs as an Executive Producer and co-showrunner. The series stars Piper Perabo as a multilingual CIA trainee unexpectedly promoted to field operative while reeling over a mysterious ex-boyfriend who appears to be of particular interest to her agency bosses.

The series will shoot their 11 episode order in Toronto.

The series also stars Christopher Gorham, Peter Gallagher, and Kari Matchett who played Nick's wife Alyssa in season 3's "Dead of Night". (Yay for another FK connection)

Okay, so The Border has apparently not heard my requests to cast Geraint Wyn Davies alongside Catherine Disher AND Nigel Bennett in a single episode (Was I not a good girl this year?), so I will now turn some of my attention to Covert Affairs. Now I know the producers are usually L.A. based, but hopefully Jim Parriott's previous experiences with Toronto will lead him to take an active role in casting. Then, he can bring all of the FK players in for guest appearances. So far the show only has an 11 episode order so he better get cracking.

And if The Border gets a 4th season pick up, I will continue to send positive vibes for Ger to make an appearance. It's only fair. ;-)
abby82: (The Border--Maggie)
Season 2 of The Border arrived in my mail box and even though I'd only seen roughly six episodes of the season I had to pop in the extra features disc. Overall it was fairly interesting stuff (I haven't listened to the commentaries) but there was one tiny interview with Catherine Disher in the 'Cast and Crew' featurette. In the interview she relates an incident that had the entire cast in stitches courtesy of Mark Wilson (Moose). I've uploaded it for viewing here.

All the other actors got to speak about their characters at some point in the extras and I was a little bummed that we didn't get Catherine talking about Maggie. But hey, I'll take what we can get. Plus, it's amusing to see her waving her arms around as she imitates Mark Wilson's gestures on set.

abby82: (The Border--Maggie)

Nominations for the 24th annual Gemini Nominations Awards were announced today and Catherine Disher has snagged the 6th of her career for her supporting work in The Border episodes "The Sweep" and "Unacceptable Risk".  Yay Cath!

She was nominated for her work on the series last year, as well as twice in the role of Natalie for Forever Knight. She won in 2004 for her lead role in Snakes & Ladders and was nominated for the TV movie Grand Larceny.

In total, The Border received 9 nominations, including one for Best Dramatic Series.

Being Erica, the absolutely delightful and whimsical time travel show also received 9 nominations, including one for lead actress Erin Karplunk and will be up against The Border for Best Dramatic series. Big yay there as well.

abby82: (SV--Lois head down promo)
Post a single line extract from each WIP you have (or as many as you want to pick). No context, no explanations, no more than one line.

From oldest to most recent:

1. "I'm what's standing between you and Eternia. Turn around, Adora. Go home, to Etheria. There's nothing for you here."

2. "Horde supplies have been increased two fold in the last week--machinery, manpower, and they've begun clearing the land. Tell us something we don't already know. Something we can use."

3. To this day he couldn't seem to understand how, he, at the age of 18, knew it was love and not just indigestion.

4. Lois strummed her fingers on the steering wheel. "So what, hang a left at Alpha Centauri and continue on past planet Vulcan?" She couldn't help it. This situation was so bizarre that she'd laugh if she wasn't experiencing it first hand.

5. Natalie had wanted to watch the Jay’s playoff game with Nick on TV but what she found instead was the landing just outside the elevator littered with old newspapers, motorcycle parts, grease, and one filthy vampire.

6.
Natalie hadn’t touched the cigarettes since that day in the hospital garden, but she’d occasionally take them out, lay them on the bed and just look at them.

7. For the third time since his arrival the squeaky wheels of a janitor’s cart broke the near silence around him.

8. "Oh sweetie I'm sorry about that. I'd kind of had an ulterior motive with the gift. I had invited Detective Knight to the party and I was hoping he'd be around when you opened your present. Kind of a subtle but not so subtle hint for the man."

9. "You're looking at it Smallville...well, it's still a work in progress but once it gets to print, it'll be a real page turner."

10. "I've been up for 36 hours straight Nick. Find someone else to play with," Nick heard Natalie's muffled voice plea and then yet again, he found himself rounding the edge of her bed.

11. "Finally! What gives Smallville? I call you up to wish you a happy birthday and you don't even have the common courtesy to answer. That's enough to make me reconsider the birthday wishes currently lying at the tip of my tongue."

12. "He's not like me, right? He's someone you can bring home to mother."

13. "'Ridiculed'?" Barbara did little to hide the incredulity in her voice. "Maggie, if I remember correctly, back then you wanted to draw blood."

The Border , which costars Catherine Disher and features Nigel Bennett as a recurring character, is coming to the U.S.

ION, a satellite and cable channel, has acquired the rights to air the series later in season 9. They were on my "no fun" list because they yanked Quantum Leap reruns just months after I found them there and this goes far at winning me back.

If you have DirectTV or Comcast then you should have ION.

This is fantastic news. Yes I have some very shiny DVDs in my possession but this is awesome for those who wanted to wanted and had to either wait or resort to other needs. ::cough:: like I sometime do.

Press Release is here. I was slightly annoyed that they mentioned Catherine Disher in relation to X-Men and not Forever Knight. hmph

*****

In other news, Smallville just got a season 9 pick up. Season 9! There's no mention of Tom Welling signing and while one would assume that there would be no Smallville without Clark you never know with the CW monkeys. The man deserves a producer title. There are no ifs or buts about it. And lastly, if Erica Durance does not receive a full season increase in episodes there will be hell to pay. She's been a 13 episodes per season gal since she started back in season 4. In what is sure to be the final season they simply cannot have Lois Lane and do her character justice with only half the amount of episodes.

I've got a Forever Knight fic for the [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon in the works called "Rogue Vampire". The deadline is this Sunday so I'm really going to have to hop into overdrive so that it's somewhat presentable by then. I do like the progress I've made so it should be ready.

My Forever Knight [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic Cohen story "Twenty Five Minutes" still needs to be tweaked before it makes an appearance at fkfic-l. I have looked at since it was first posted at the ficathon but not as seriously as I should. It works as it is but I do feel like its missing something that's identifiable as FK.  The problem lies in that Cohen could easily be replaced by some random named individual and it really wouldn't make much difference.

I've also committed myself to absolutely finishing my Tracy POV Forever Knight fic. It needs to be up by the end of the year. It's a self-imposed deadline.

I've been laying down some early exchanges for a Forever Knight/The Border crossover that I first thought about earlier in the year. It's really more of a Border story but the presence of Forever Knight's elements should be felt. I'm working mostly through Maggie's thought processes since it is through her POV but I do need to think about the character of Moose and his history as former Toronto PD.

I've got an AU X-Files fic called "An Affair Together" based on a prompt from the [livejournal.com profile] xf_pornbattle  in the works. I don't know when it'll see the light of day but right now it's one of the fics that gets worked on regularly.

I just heard a lovely song by A Fine Frenzy called "Almost Lover" that's giving me some Tracy/Vachon vibes. I need to listen to it about twenty thousand more times but I think the first verse, which is just over 1:30, could really lend itself to a post-"Ashes to Ashes" vidlet in which Tracy believes that Vachon skipped town.

I haven't been posting on Smallville but it's been all kinds of awesome. All the characters are really working wonderfully. Yeah Clark's entrance into the Daily Planet is kinda wonky but I love what the new showrunners are doing. You can see the show and the characters transitioning nicely into Superman.  And Lois...what's there to say about Lois that hasn't been said. Amazing barely captures her and what Erica Durance is doing.

Friday Night Lights is so utterly perfect that it's crazy. For me it's almost surpassing the brilliance of the first season which is pretty damn amazing in and of itself. I watch an episode and I feel like no time has gone by. The credits roll and I'm thinking, "What already?" and sure enough 45 minutes have gone by and I didn't even feel them. I'm that enthralled in the storytelling of this show. It's absolute brilliance.

And on the real life side... )

abby82: (The Border--Maggie)
I have to admit that I've yet to see a single episode of The Border's new episodes but I have checked out their snazzy new website. It looks like their going to be pushing the younger agents as well as the new American Homeland Security agent and the British MI-6 agent. I guess that's fine but I hope they don't forget to give the older crowd their share of stories.

Maggie! )
abby82: (Quantum Leap--Sam leaping)
I've been watching Quantum Leap reruns lately on ION or rather I should say I was watching Quantum Leap on ION. The channel is rebranding itself and QL is either on hiatus or has been kicked to the curb. It's a shame. It's so gosh darn enjoyable. )
---------

[livejournal.com profile] brightknightie has kindly posted on her journal a list of FK prompts for [livejournal.com profile] galpalficathon . There are so many to choose from. They're that good. The goal of the ficathon is "to celebrate non-sexual/non-romantic relationships between women." FK isnt the only fandom represented. Battlestar Galactica, Dark Angel, the DC universe, Doctor Who, Friday Night Lights, Gossip Girl, Smallville, Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate SG1, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and X-Files are just a few of the other fandoms with prompts.
---------

I read a few days ago about the impending demolition of Yankee Stadium and I instantly thought of Prufrock's Love historical AU X-Files fanfic A Moment in the Sun. I remember reading it... )

---------
I posted this over at [livejournal.com profile] the_border this weekend but I neglected to do so here. According to TV Shows on DVD The Border is coming to DVD in Canada on November 12th. Since Canada and the US are both Region 1 those of us in the states who purchase from a Canadian retailer should be able to use the DVDs. Season 2 starts next Monday on the 29th.
---------
The [livejournal.com profile] xf_pornbattle is going strong. I took a look at some of the prompts last night and one of the them jumped out of me. Hmmm, maybe. The deadline is Wednesday and I really should be finishing up my [livejournal.com profile] oldschoolfic story but it's tempting.
---------

I caught DirectTV's breathtaking promo for season 3 of Friday Night Lights. Sadly there was no Jason or Smash but Coach, Mrs. Coach, Julie, Matt, Lyla, Landry, Tyra, and Riggins were present and accounted for. It's eerily beautiful. Everyone is frolicking wandering through a dark, magical field and are dressed in their finery. "Devil Town" and the rumbling of thunder sets the mood. Did I mention it was gorgeous? Note to self: rewatch seasons 1 & 2 before October.

abby82: (The Border--Mannering)
Both The Border and Murdoch Mysteries came out pretty well in the nominations department for the 23rd Annual Geminis, the highest honor in Canadian television.

The Border received 9, including Best Dramatic Series, Lead Actor, Supporting Actor, and Supporting Actress for Catherine Disher. That last one of course makes me very happy. I'm such a fan of Catherine Disher and I believe this will be her 5th nomination. She was nominated twice for her work as Natalie on Forever Knight, she won in 2004 for Snakes & Ladders and her first nomination was for her ultra adorable and hilarious turn in the TV movie Grand Larceny as a ditzy showgirl. If you haven't seen it you should track it down immediately.

Ben Bass who played Vachon on the final season of Forever Knight also scored a nomination for his work in the mini-series Would Be Kings as Best Lead Actor. I've heard lots of great things about this but I've yet to get my hands on it. This certainly is an incentive.

Murdoch Mysteries made out like gang busters with 14 nominations. They're well deserved. It's a highly enjoyable and unique show. Although I was disappointed that Geraint Wyn Davies didn't get any recognition for his role in either one of his two guest performances as Arthur Conan Doyle. GWD really makes me happy. Phooey!

It also would have been nice to have Ger and Catherine together in the same auditorium. They presented together back in 1993. [profile] kristin1228 has screengrabs up at KnightVision here.

Nigel Bennett didn't get a nomination either for his supporting work in The Border but for me it's not completely unexpected. At times his character is too much of a one dimensional bad guy and he really hasn't been given anything to work with. Hopefully during the upcoming second season this'll change.

All this reminds me how behind I am in screengrabbing The Border. At least the Maggie and Mannering scenes. I've meant to and I keep getting sidetracked. Bad me!

Edited to add: I forgot to mention that Erica Durance also received a nomination for Best Performance by an Actress in a Leading Role in a Dramatic Program or Mini-Series for I Me Wed.
abby82: (Whoa!)
When it comes to new TV shows I tend to have this rule. I rarely watch a series in its first outing and it isn't until a second or third season that I check out shows that had struck me as interesting and have somehow managed to make it through the network television gauntlet.

The X-Files--middle of its 5th season.
Smallville--middle of its 5th season.
Supernatural--reruns of the 1st season in preparation for season 2.
Six Feet Under--3rd season
Ally McBeal--3rd season
Roswell--2nd season
Homicide: Life on the Streets--4th season
Gilmore Girls --6th season
Veronica Mars--3rd season

Of course there are exceptions to that rule. I was there for the very beginnings of Deadwood and Rome (both on HBO), Friday Night Lights on NBC, Millennium on Fox, and this season's Damages on FX. However as a general rule and as a means of protecting myself from getting too attached to a series that probably won't even make it past their 3rd episode, I generally choose to stay away. Sure I follow the media buzz surrounding those shows that I'm interested in but I always stay a safe distance away. Pre-launch buzz doesn't always translate into ratings. Can you say Bionic Woman, because I can.

However this season I deviated from the very plan that had always worked so well for me. My theory is that the shows that appealed to me reminded me of shows that are near and dear to my heart.

I've been feeling a little under the weather so the Internet really has no interest for me right now but in the process of quickly checking up online I came across a new multi fandom drabble-a-thon. It's entitled, "Because We Are Awesome" and it's being hosted by [personal profile] medie.

I've received most of my fic inspiration from fic challenges, especially where Forever Knight is concerned. I just have trouble completing most of them in time. After all if someone out there in livejournal-land has been kind enough to remember FK in their fic prompts it would be poor manners to not oblige them.

This time around, however, I've decided to throw in a few of my own prompts. I posted two separate times and they're mostly Forever Knight and Smallville prompts but I've also thrown in a few other fandoms. There's a multitude of fandoms being represented so there should be something for everyone.

abby82: (Whoa!)
There are not enough hours in the day to do what I want in real life let alone in my fannish world.

I'm reading a favorite XF novel lengthed fic "Blinded by White Light" by DashaK that's been recovered from the hard drive of my long dead laptop on one window, I'm clipping a few Schanke moments for my first ever fanvid on Premiere Elements, and I'm bouncing around livejournals on another window. That's when I came across a tutorial by [personal profile] brokenmnemonic    on how to cap using VirtualDubMod, the program I downloaded to convert vob (the files from my dvds) into avi and then make a few clips. So what does that mean? I can cap The Border, Ger's episode of The Murdoch Mysteries, and Ger's appearances on ReGenesis!

Mulder, Scully, and Schanke are suddenly feeling very neglected.

More caps will probably come soon but here's a few of Catherine Disher and Nigel Bennett from the first episode "Pockets of Vulnerability", Catherine Disher and Gary Farmer in the second episode "Grey Zone", and Catherine Disher in the eighth episode "Enemy Contact".

Yay to more Cath and Nigel and here's to hopin' that Geraint Wyn Davies makes an appearance.

Hee!

Geraint Wyn Davies as Arthur Conan Doyle in The Murdoch Mysteries

It looks like in between filming guest stints for the fourth season of ReGenesis, doing a theatrical run of The Elephant Man, and preparing for his role as Polonious in MacBeth in a return stint to the Stratford Festival, Ger has managed to fit in a guest stint on Citytv's The Murdoch Mysteries.

abby82: (Default)
Fandom wise I keep adding things to my plate. I say I'm going to do something and then something else comes along and usurps it's position on my priority list. Twice I've had fic challenges distract me from my long festering stories. Now the upside is that the time restraints force me to actually produce something rather than let it fester but still. I feel like a neglectful mother.

So what I've decided to do is create a list of projects that can realistically be done. Therefore finishing my Forever Knight stories 'Things We Lost in the Fire' and 'Lives Interrupted' won't be included. My poor babies. Mamma just doesn't know how to make you behave.

Anyway, in no particular order...

abby82: (Whoa! CD in Vindicator)
I don't know why I hadn't thought of this before but I think the answer is a definite yes but not for the obvious reason which is that both series take place in Toronto.

It came to me last night as I watched Maggie, Catherine Disher's character on The Border babysit a Russian stripper...oh sorry exotic dancer. Their exchanges where hilarious by the way but back on topic. Maggie's last name is Norton and if I recall correctly in season one of Forever Knight wasn't there a certain mayoral candidate that Natalie so vehemently threw her support behind. What was her name? Oh yeah Barbara Norton.

I'm just throwing this out there and I can't believe it took me this long to realize this. Also I'm a little bummed that I couldn't participate in the ficathon over at [community profile] femme_fic and my mind is going overboard with what type of FK prompt/story I could have written. Perhaps a story focused on Barbara Norton from the episode 'Spin Doctor' in the aftermath of her loss and it dawning on her that one of her supporters resembled her sister, or cousin, or sister-in-law Maggie.

There's some nice symmetry to Natalie's big mistake on local television and Maggie's wrong place at the wrong time, she' s just following orders mistake that lands her on national television. Oh wait that's another story right there! Maggie was concerned that Kessler might be questioning her objectivity when he didn't let her interrogate the reporter who made a fool of her on TV and that left some issues that weren't completely addressed. Perhaps back in 1993 Maggie didn't have very kind words for her family member's so called supporter and how her actions may have caused Barbara the election. Now much to her annoyance Maggie finds herself in almost the same situation 15 years later.

I desperately want to revisit 'Spin Doctor' but unfortunately I can't.  The DVD that contains that episode along with 'Feeding the Beast' and 'Only the Lonely' has been missing in action for a few months now and I'm at a loss to explain where it's gone to. I suspect it's having a grand old time with my CD of the Forever Knight soundtrack which has been missing for over a year now. Perhaps that's my project for the weekend. I'm going to turn my room upside and search for my errant DVD.
abby82: (Whoa! CD in Vindicator)
So the CBC up in Canada is starting their midseason slew of show soon and one of them features the return of Catherine Disher back to tv. At first glance The Border looks like a 24 knockoff or at the very least like another one of those shows the premiered after 24 took off like The Agency. 13 episodes have already been shot to complete their first season. Ratings will tell whether or not they get a second. The trailer sure does give off that vibe but in reading some of the comments by one of the writers it might have a 24 look and be paced just like the Kiefer Sutherland adrenaline rush it will also deal with issues beyond those of 24's.

So I was checking out the official website to see if anymore goodies had been added and I wasn't  disappointed. Catherine Disher has been added to the flash intro featuring the main characters which is full of awesomeness but that wasn't the only surprise. Nigel Bennett (who I thought was only going to be making guest appearances) has been added as well. What has totally made my day is that both of their images are right next to each other.

It also looks like the CBC is going to making the episodes available online so those of us outside of Canada will be able to watch. That makes me very happy indeed. I'm very excited for this. I can't wait. Hopefully Nigel and Catherine will have scenes together. Their scenes together in Forever Knight were so few but the handful of times they were together they were very powerful. Given the different agencies their characters work for and the different mentalities they have any scenes if any will be filled with animosity. Bring it on!
