Fandom odds and ends

I've been watching Quantum Leap reruns lately on ION or rather I should say I was watching Quantum Leap on ION. The channel is rebranding itself and QL is either on hiatus or has been kicked to the curb. It's a shame. It's so gosh darn enjoyable. Scott Bakula and Dean Stockwell are so charismatic it's insane. I only own the first and last seasons on DVD because they're the only ones in Region 1 with the original music. However I recently decided to pop in the pilot episode and I'm stunned by all the new to me scenes. I must have completely bypassed the pilot when I first got the set. Among the new tidbits was the revelation that Sam had streaked in college and got kicked out for a bit. Sam a streaker!? That strikes me as so out of character and yet it doesn't. Sam is notoriously modest and running around naked isn't something he'd do. Especially considering that he started college at such a young age. But then again over the course of the series Sam has been able to break free of the self-restricting confines he'd created for himself. Through leaping he was given a license to try new and different experiences that Sam Beckett wouldn't normally have pursued. Perhaps streaking was one way in which a young Sam tested his own boundaries.
Way back when I was watching the series reruns on USA Network I purchased a few of the official QL novels. I have about four of them and among them is an origin story for the project. In watching the series both on ION and my dvds I've become fascinated with the dynamics of the people Sam left behind in the future and Sam's relationships with them. I've never read QL fic so I decided to mine my own collection in hopes of satisfying that curiosity. Quantum Leap: Prelude does take some liberties with aspects from the show but it is an interesting read. It's got rival scientists, attempts at sabotage and plausible explanations for quirks in the show like Al's colorful wardrobe, the special "ingredients" that made Ziggy so groundbreaking, and most importantly the accidental flaw that prevents Ziggy from retrieving Sam throughout the series. While looking around online I've discovered that in the years since I've moved away from QL even more official novels have been released. I don't know about their quality but it'll be interesting to fish around online and see what fans are saying about. I'm glad the fans got them but at the same time I can't help but feel a bit envious. QL is a wonderful cult show that has managed to continue with the production of official content (the novels) years after the show has gone off the year. Yet my beloved Forever Knight never really got that that opportunity. I guess it just makes me sad. And while one the subject of Forever Knight and Quantum Leap I noticed that one of the latter episodes was written by Gillian Horvath who wrotes such FK episodes as "Queen of Harps" and "A Fate Worse Than Death". John Kapelos also guest starred as an Egyptian archeologist.
brightknightie has kindly posted on her journal a list of FK prompts for
galpalficathon . There are so many to choose from. They're that good. The goal of the ficathon is "to celebrate non-sexual/non-romantic relationships between women." FK isnt the only fandom represented. Battlestar Galactica, Dark Angel, the DC universe, Doctor Who, Friday Night Lights, Gossip Girl, Smallville, Stargate: Atlantis, Stargate SG1, Sarah Connor Chronicles, and X-Files are just a few of the other fandoms with prompts.
I read a few days ago about the impending demolition of Yankee Stadium and I instantly thought of Prufrock's Love historical AU X-Files fanfic A Moment in the Sun. I remember reading it when it was a WIP. It also happened to be the first AU and historical fic I ever read. I thought it fitting that I revisit the fic given the Mulder's former profession in the fic. It's not my most favorite pru fic (that distinction belongs to Paracelsus) but it ranks up there. It's Mulder and Scully involved in the early stages of the XF mytharc with a good dose of mytharc, angst, and MSR.
the_border this weekend but I neglected to do so here. According to TV Shows on DVD The Border is coming to DVD in Canada on November 12th. Since Canada and the US are both Region 1 those of us in the states who purchase from a Canadian retailer should be able to use the DVDs. Season 2 starts next Monday on the 29th.
xf_pornbattle is going strong. I took a look at some of the prompts last night and one of the them jumped out of me. Hmmm, maybe. The deadline is Wednesday and I really should be finishing up my
oldschoolfic story but it's tempting.
I caught DirectTV's breathtaking promo for season 3 of Friday Night Lights. Sadly there was no Jason or Smash but Coach, Mrs. Coach, Julie, Matt, Lyla, Landry, Tyra, and Riggins were present and accounted for. It's eerily beautiful. Everyone isfrolicking wandering through a dark, magical field and are dressed in their finery. "Devil Town" and the rumbling of thunder sets the mood. Did I mention it was gorgeous? Note to self: rewatch seasons 1 & 2 before October.
