A little bit of Ghostbusters and a little bit of X-Files before there was an X-Files, Beyond Reality was a Canadian half hour series that focused on two university parapsychologists who would investigate cases of telekinesis, ghosts, etc . Basically all the stuff that would make Fox Mulder drool. The series was shot in Toronto so plenty of Toronto based actors made an appearance during it's two season reason.

Forever Knight fans will find a lot of familiar touches throughout. The series was scored by Fred Molin who memorably went on to work on Forever Knight. Beyond Reality is also on the filmography of FK producers Jon Slan and Richard Borchiver. Anyone else remember the Borchiver Award on "Can't Run, Can't Hide"? Costume designer Mary Partridge and Production Supervisor Noella Nesdoly are two other familiar names.

Today we look at Deborah Duchene's 1991 guest stint as the ghost of a young woman killed in a very tragic way. She had a run in with a choo choo train and she's returned to haunt the scene of her death and her very married and paralyzed lover, Nicholas Campbell of Da Vinci's Inquest fame. Writing credit for the episode goes to Marc Scott Zicree, who also wrote the season 2 Forever Knight episode "The Fire Inside" and three episodes of He-Man and the Masters of the Universe in the early 80s. Talk about fandoms colliding.

abby82: (I approve!)

In preparation for X-Files: I Want to Believe Fox is releasing a two disc set featuring 8 quintessential episodes for the newbie spanning seasons 1-6. Among them are season 1's "Beyond the Sea", season 2's "The Host", season 3's "Clyde Bruckman's Final Repose", season 4's "Memento Mori", season 5's "Bad Blood" and season 6's "Milagro". Chris Carter and his series right hand man Frank Spontniz filmed introductions to the episodes and the intro for "Milagro" is online. Gillian Anderson hilariously joins Chris Carter for his interview and I gotta say that she couldn't possibly be more adorable if she tried.

It's fun to see Chris trying to be serious but failing as a goofy Gillian perches her chin on his shoulder. Her facial expressions are hilarious as she reacts to Chris' commentary. She expresses confusion when Chris calls "Milagro" one of the series' best episodes and shock when he mentions that Sean Penn once told him it was the best X-Files episode they ever did. Their segment ends with a quick kiss from Gililan to Chris that makes makes my Xphile heart go awwwwwwww.

I can't take credit for finding this. That comes compliments of Svenborgia at the X-Files forum at TWoP.

In other XF2 news there's an article about UNKLE's involvement with the soundtrack. Apparently he's "reinterpreting" the theme and another one of his songs will run during the closing credits. I've already downloaded it and I'm already a big fan of it, although the lyrics "We're miles adrift/ We're inches apart" has some fans worried about the status of the MSR.

abby82: (The Border--Mannering)
A while back I posted a few screengrabs of Geraint Wyn Davies in Murdoch Mysteries and I mentioned to [personal profile] shenandora that I had a few Nigel Bennett screengrabs that weren't from The Border, which I've also been posting from. I've always enjoyed recording the TV and movie appearances my favorite actors, especially their early stuff. In the case of the Forever Knight actors it's sometimes a bit hard but the quest is half the fun. A fellow fan provided me a slew of tapes, most of which were of Nigel Bennett. One of the tapes was a 1989 movie called "The Jeweller's Shop" in which he played a ballet choreographer. The movie itself was ok and while Nigel's role was rather small it did have an interesting cast. The cast included Olivia Hussey who starred as Juliet in Franco Zeffrelli's Romeo and Juliet, legendary Hollywood actor Burt Lancaster, actor Ben Cross who once played Barnabas Collins in the remake of Dark Shadows, and Melora Hardin who is now known from The Office but I know her from her integral role in a Quantum Leap three parter. She once guested in an episode of Lois & Clark  as Lois' old college roommate and ever since then I've thought that she'd be perfect to play Lois' mother in flashback in Smallville. She's also the daughter of Jerry Hardin who played Mulder's first informant Deep Throat in The X-Files.

But anyway on to the Nigel Bennett screengrabs.

It took a little longer than I expected but here is the second half of Geraint Wyn Davies' 2nd appearance on CTV's (Canada) Murdoch Mysteries.

Geraint Wyn Davies recently reprised his role on Murdoch Mysteries as author Arthur Conan Doyle. Doyle makes a surprising return to Toronto with the intention of basing a new character on Murdoch and his revolutionary forensic techiques. His return coincides with a case involving a ventriloquist, the ventriloquist's dummy "Harcourt" and the man's murdered father. It's when Doyle begins to inquire about an old case involving a Chinese doctor and the doctor's fate` that Doyle's true and personal reason for returning comes to light..

I have the tendancy of going overboard with my capping and this episode is no exception.  So in the interest of keeping the images in the post to a reasonable amount I'm dividing it into two parts. The second part will be up in a couple of days.

But for now here are the first batch of images from the Murdoch Mysteries episode "Belly Speaker".

Ger as Arthur Conan Doyle returns! )

About a month ago I posted about Geraint Wyn Davies' guest appearance on Citytv's (Canada) Murdoch Mysteries as Arthur Conan Doyle. I've since been able to get my hands on the episode and I've capped a few scenes involving GWD. It was a highly enjoyable guest appearance and one that I just found out he's reprised. I got a hold of that episode too but I'm afraid (or not) that I've gone a bit overboard with capping so those caps won't be up till next weekend. Now that episode was creepy and hilarious and Ger got to play a wide range of emotions. It was a real treat. But more on that later. For now here are 20 or so caps from the Murdoch Mysteries episode "Elementary My Dear Murdoch".
abby82: (Whoa!)
There are not enough hours in the day to do what I want in real life let alone in my fannish world.

I'm reading a favorite XF novel lengthed fic "Blinded by White Light" by DashaK that's been recovered from the hard drive of my long dead laptop on one window, I'm clipping a few Schanke moments for my first ever fanvid on Premiere Elements, and I'm bouncing around livejournals on another window. That's when I came across a tutorial by [personal profile] brokenmnemonic    on how to cap using VirtualDubMod, the program I downloaded to convert vob (the files from my dvds) into avi and then make a few clips. So what does that mean? I can cap The Border, Ger's episode of The Murdoch Mysteries, and Ger's appearances on ReGenesis!

Mulder, Scully, and Schanke are suddenly feeling very neglected.

More caps will probably come soon but here's a few of Catherine Disher and Nigel Bennett from the first episode "Pockets of Vulnerability", Catherine Disher and Gary Farmer in the second episode "Grey Zone", and Catherine Disher in the eighth episode "Enemy Contact".

abby82: (Nick & Nat)
It's Election Day in Texas and people are heading out in droves to the polls. I early voted and there's no work today which means there's plenty of time to goof off on the computer.

Forever Knight had two episodes that featured elections. Season 1's 'Spin Doctor' and Season 2 's 'Beyond the Law' had one in flashback. My dvd with 'Spin Doctor' is missing so I can't make my own screegrabs for it although I could borrow a few from the awesome archive The Knight Watchman . In the mean time here are a few from 2.20 'Beyond the Law' which featured Nick as an off duty cop working campaign security in Chicago in 1968. It also had Lisa Ryder, who later went on to play Nick's new partner Tracy Vetter in season 3, as an enthusiastic campaign staffer who gets in way over her head. And lastly, it features a tiny cameo appearance by Geraint Wyn Davies' brother as a background player.

abby82: (Nick & Nat from Dark Knight in FK)
So I was on call to serve in a federal jury for the last two weeks. The first time I went (dad drove me) I lucked out and got sent home but I had to keep calling to check in the second week. On the last day to call in I thought I was home free but lo and behold I got called in again but rather than the 9AM call time I had before this time they wanted us there by 7:30AM. As it is in most cities parking downtown is predominantly parallel parking which I haven't done since my driving test years ago so I was going to have to park at the one available parking garage open to the general public. Also, I'd never driven downtown so armed with my dad's directions and a map from mapquest I made it there ok. Although I did get turned around a bit and a street I was expecting to pass disappeared. Go figure. Well long story short they were selecting for two similar cases and I was the very first person selected that day to serve for a two day trial. Thankfully it was a 9AM start time so I didn't have to leave home at 5:30AM like I did for the 7:30AM call time. I left home at 6:30AM and allowed plenty of time to deal with the construction outside of town, all the heavy truck traffic from the gas rigs, and early morning school and work traffic once I made it into the city.

That was the first time I'd ever served on a jury and while I certainly believe that it is our civic responsibility to serve when call upon to participate in the justice system it did leave a troubling feeling. The decision we made would have a profound affect on the life of the defendent. Either all charges would be cleared or there would be time behind bars. I really couldn't get over the similarities between the prosecution's case and another recent case that hit closer to home. The difference being that the latter had a very wonderful feeling of elation and relief and the former, when we decided on a verdict, didn't. It was an interesting experience but I certainly hope it's a while before I'm called to serve again.

On a slightly different note, there were time in that courtroom when we were completely bored out of our minds. The amount of time spent on the dimensions of a window in county lock up had even the judge annoyed. I'm a little embarassed to admit that during the brief pauses I found myself thinking about the Forever Knight episode "False Witness" when Nick claimed to have seen the murder of their informant by a slippery pornographer. Granted the Canadian and American judicial systems do have their differences, as is often the case a lot of Americanisms creeped into the show.

I kept flashing on Natalie's "Do you smell pina coladas?" query when Nick walks by her into the parking garage elevator. Oh Natalie if you only knew. That's not Nick's regular aftershave, lol.

So here's a Forever Knight picspam from the trial portion of "False Witness".
